Sparkling Colors, 2019

Nevin Aladağ studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. Aladağ uses various means of expression, ranging from performance and sculpture to sound, video, and photography. Her works bear marks of the artist’s process of adapting to different cultures throughout her life. According to Aladağ, her experiences growing up in Germany led her to seek out new languages, new connotations, and displacements. She interprets issues such as immigration and the refugee situation through social and political dynamics, and in turn conveys these issues through installations in which she uses urban and natural elements as mediums and considers sound in conjunction with space.

“sparkling colors” is from the series “Pattern Kinship,” which the artist worked on for four years. The series involved a unique formal method in which abstractions were created out of various images and geometric shapes. The ornamentation and patterns of Venetian blinds are brought together in different combinations of colors and frames on a single surface. Venetian blinds are a type of window covering operated via a lever mechanism and have been used in various cultures throughout history. The artist is interested in the role that these shutters play in the privacy at home and has designed the panels accordingly so that they are partially see-through. Aladağ creates an illusion by using patterns and sparkly colors on fluidly intermingling geometric shapes that intersect to form new surfaces.
